Heirloom Photographs

& Their Role in my Life

A huge part of who I am came from my grandparents. Beside the sacrifices they made to help provide for their children’s children, their incredible Faith and legacy of discipleship have impacted my upbringing in beautiful and extraordinary ways.

My Opa, Hylmar Karbach, was a patient, kind, disciplined man. He was, notably, head over heels in love with my Granny, Ann Karbach. Opa documented years of their relationship- chronicles of trips abroad, litters of kittens, cigarettes and fishing, and truly off guard moments with my Granny. His artistic view and the way he preserved every slide of film, intentionally and with the thought of sharing them with grandkids one day, fuels my love for film and documenting authentic emotion.

My grandparents have both passed now. There are certainly times when I wish I could drive over and sit down for shortbread cookies, and ask about their travel and home life and Christmas memories. The beautiful thing about having these photos to look back on is that I might not have direct answers, but I have a picture in my mind, an honest and pure reference that might still leave me with questions, but I certainly feel peace and comfort flipping through the chronicles on camera. It’s had a huge impact on how I photograph and what I wish to give my clients.
